michael.negrini
Another very interesting ant-plant (and more, there is an associated fungus) interaction, Hirtella physophora & Allomerus decemmarticulatus :

Frank
Hi Michael, great photos, but I need some help identifing what I see. So there is a brown twig with hairs (?) on one side, sometimes up, sometimes down (perhaps just camera angle?) Is the black material on the twig a carton structure from the ants? If it is a carton tunnel they are certainly more on it than in it. Why all the holes in it? Is this another of your at home ant colonies or a habitat photo? Thanks, Frank
Aurélien
There's some papers (not really news) about this strange interaction, which explain well it. http://www.nature.com/news/2005/050418/full/news050418-11.html http://io9.com/5907344/these-amazonian-ants-build-one-of-the-freakiest-deathtraps-in-the-animal-kingdom I was really impressed 10 years ago when I read it for the firts time ! This plant was really intricate and mysterious for me, thanks a lot for sharing these photos.
Frank
Thanks for the excellent links Aurelien. Another fantastic ant/plant relationship! A picture may be worth a thousand words, but in this case the words were worth much more to my understanding.
