Andreas Wistuba
Hi Jeff, Does it set seeds for you? I never had a single drupe from my two plants and they flower all the time. It's certainly related to H. formicarum IMHO, but I think it's a good separate species. All the best Andreas
jeff
Bonjour yes I have always some drupe with my cultivate condition. I have 2 formicarum species ( smooth and ridged tuber ) a lot of difference with sp mentawei , the leaves ,the stem, the tuber. I thought H.andamanense but maybe I'm wrong and may be H.andamenense , can be part of the complex formicarum jeff
Derrick
The Mentawai islands sit off the south coast of Sumatra Island at 2° 11′ 0″ S, 99° 39′ 0″ E. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mentawai_Islands_Regency The Andaman Islands are far to the north west in the Indian Ocean at 12° 30′ 0″ N, 92° 45′ 0″ E. At the far western limit of hydnophytum ranges. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andaman_Islands If the provenance of your specimens is correct (i.e. Mentawai islands) it is unlikely that there is any close connection with H. andamanense, which occurs at the far western end of the Sunda Tectonic Arc. There may have been some ancient historic connections during lower sea levels of past ice ages. More opinions here, where the (presumably lone) Andaman Island species is usually accepted as H. formicarum. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/indiantreepix/vfH0sd4SIDU http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3016900/ However, if I were to label a specimen from the Andaman Island as H. formicarum, I would add "Andaman Islands form". H. andamanense Becc. (Odoardo Beccari) in Malesia raccolta 2, p156, tav48, (1885). A description based on the nom nud (naked name) of H. formicarum Kurz. Not to be confused with H. formicarum Jack. (Malesia 2) http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/44197759#page/270/mode/1up Image, tav38 http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/44197759#page/163/mode/1up Note. http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/44197759#page/269/mode/1up. Now usually accepted as H. formicarum Jack.
jeff
a friend , bring back to me this hydnophytum from Siberut island ( MENTAWEI) hard to see here a H.formicarum, it seems to me , a lot of morphological characters do not stick. I always look for a resemblance to a greater or lesser known species jean françois
