Access to Brocchinia locations in Guyana

2 posts in this topic

Hi All –

I saw a very nice photo of the myrmecophyte Brocchinia acuminata (Bromeliaceae) on this site, and so there must be at least a few people familiar with it here. I've studied this species in Venezuela, long ago, but permits and safety issues have become very challenging there.  I wonder if anyone has experience with this plant in Guyana?  I'm familiar with Kaieteur Falls, which is wonderful, but don't recall seeing it there.  Would really like to get some plant tissue for ecological research from B. acuminata, B. tatei, and B. steyermarkii.  Surely these must occur at forest/savanna and forest/bog interfaces just across the border, but I have zero experience there.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  Cheers, Tom

The following species are listed in the Checklist of the plants of the Guianas  (http://botany.si.edu/bdg/pdf/guilist2nd.pdf ) from the Smithsonian.  Perhaps they have contacts that can help you get access.
