I have attached an excellent 2011 article on perhaps the most fascinating ant-associated orchid genus. I would draw everyone's attention to Figure 1, which should be of particular interest to members of this forum. All of the 41 Coryanthes species are found growing in very acid conditions on ant-gardens. Coryanthes macrantha [Hooker] William Jackson Hooker published in Botanical Magazine 58, 1831. Basionym Gongora macrantha Hooker published in Botanical Miscellany 2, 1831. Synonym Panstrepis paradoxa Rafinesque 1836. Common names Bucket Orchid; in Trinidad called the Monkey Throat Orchid. Always associated with ant gardens. Description: A large epiphyte with narrowly ovoid, sulcate, (having narrow, deep furrows) bifoliate (two leafed) pseudobulbs with lanceolate (lance shaped), plicate (pleated) and ribbed leaves with a channeled petiole which blooms on basal, pendant, 30 cm (12") long, bracteate, 1 to 2 flowered, racemose inflorescences arising on mature pseudobulbs with large, waxy, short lived, fragrant 13cm. (5") summer flowers, smelling strongly of mint and held well below the plant. Habitats: Wet lowland rainforests. Range: Caribbean (Trinidad,) northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil & Peru. Requires warmth. Habitats: Epiphytic in low-lying, hot, humid regions, usually below 1000 m (3300 ft.) Range: Mexico, Caribbean (Trinidad Tobago) Central America (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica) South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, French Guiana and Brazil.)
