DischidiaGuy
I have heard that this species also has ant relationships. Not sure how valid it is but the species does produce a caudex that has similarities to Hydnophytum and Lecanopteris.
Andreas Wistuba
I have heard that this species also has ant relationships. Not sure how valid it is but the species does produce a caudex that has similarities to Hydnophytum and Lecanopteris. Thank you. I was not aware of this Genus. I just googled a bit and found this: http://www.columbus-cactus-club.webs.com/Monolena%20primulaeflora.htm
Derrick
Melastomataceae. Monolena primuliflora Joseph Dalton Hooker (Hook. f.) published in Botanical Magazine 96: t5818, 1870 as primulaeflora. Synonym Bertolonia primuliflora. Range Central America; Costa Rica, Panama. South America; Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil. A caudiciform terrestrial forest species that produces food bodies to attract ants. It is reputedly very sensitive to drought and requires warmth and shade. There is very little ecological information available in English, perhaps Portugese or Spanish linguists can find more? DischidiaGuy
I'll post some photos of my plants when I get a chance. It is a beautiful plant and it sets seed frequently. I have some seed for those interested in trading.
Bikerdoc
This is one of my favorites. What's not to like.... caudex, beautiful foliage and pretty flowers!!! They definitely require water as they wilt quickly if allowed to dry slightly. As a segue, might anyone have seeds and or plants of another member of this family, Calvoa orientalis?
